Episode 76: Chalk Dust Torture!

This week, we decided to discuss and explore Chalk Dust Torture and its evolution over the years. Phish has of course been playing this song since 1991, and the evolution of the song has pretty closely followed the trajectory of their music—incredible precision, then a bit of exploration, then funk, then way more space and groove, then into the current era of patient but ambitious jams. Tracks below, and you can download the episode directly here.

If you haven't yet, please take our quick survey about how we can improve the podcast. Also, review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. As we mentioned last week, episodes 1-20 of HF Pod are available on the Internet Archive. Please do go back and listen if you want to hear some our less.....refined offerings.

And the 8.31.13 Chalk Dust tweet we referenced.

  1. A few things to note. That Ghost you played from Dublin 97 was the FIRST EVER!! I thought that deserved a mention.

Also, the Europe footage from BM was actually from 98. I don't know why Todd Phillips decided to skew the chronology. I remember seeing the firm and wondering why it was fall 97>nye 97>europe 98>great went?

Anyway. Thanks for all you do! Podcast is great!

  2. Dear Helping Phreiendly Podcast gurus,

First and foremost, thank you, thank you, thank you for what you guys do. As a huge fan that got into phish in '03 (Pepsi Arena, 12/1/2003) I am often not as deeply versed as I would like in the history of Phish. I am lucky to be friends with Suzi and Brian Brinkman but outside of those two I do not frequently get to indulge my interest in shows past. I hit all 4 shows at MSG just recently and night 4 was my 50th. Fucking great. I love listening to what you guys do, and am slowly working my way through your back catalogue of podcasts. Thank you so much for shedding light on so much for a relative newbie here.

All that said, I can't believe you had a whole show on Chalkdust and didn't play the Randall's night 3 version. Seriously, that was the focal point of the weekend! The whole 3 day run culminated in that 2nd set. Chalkdust, Light, Tweezer. The greatest 60 minutes of Phish I've ever heard.

Dicks Chalkdust was great, but holy shit, listen to that triad of music again. It is why we go. It's not even close.

    Love you guys!
